The U.S. Army Office of Special Trial Counsel announced a significant verdict regarding a shooting incident at Fort Stewart, Georgia, last summer. Sgt. Quornelius S. Radford, aged 29, received six consecutive life sentences for attempting to murder five fellow soldiers and his male fiancé. Parole is a possibility, but Radford’s penalties also include forfeiting all pay and allowances, a rank reduction to E-1, and a dishonorable discharge. He will be confined to the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
The shooting occurred on August 6 when Radford launched a violent attack amidst his unit. Major Matthew Fields, a prosecutor within the Army’s OSTC, remarked on the severity of the betrayal involved, highlighting how soldiers are trained to confront external enemies, not threats from within their ranks. Fields stated, “Sgt. Radford’s actions shattered the fundamental trust essential to military units.”
Army Criminal Investigation Division special agent Ryan O’Connor affirmed that the conviction demonstrates the branch’s dedication to service member safety and community security.
Radford, an automated logistics sergeant from Jacksonville, Florida, joined the Army in 2018. Prior to the shooting, he had no known disciplinary issues, although local records indicated a concealed DUI arrest in May 2025. The attack was triggered by an argument with his fiancé, who feared Radford was contemplating suicide and followed him to the military installation. In the parking lot of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area, Radford shot his fiancé and subsequently entered the unit’s offices, where he shot four soldiers and attempted to shoot a fifth.
Sgt. Radford was subdued by fellow soldiers until law enforcement intervened. Brig. Gen. John Lubas asserted that these soldiers’ actions prevented further casualties, with unit members providing immediate first aid to the wounded until EMS arrived. Remarkably, all six victims survived, though they recounted to the military judge their traumatic experiences. During the trial, the affected parties unanimously expressed that Radford merited the most severe punishment.
Alexandra Koch, reporting for Fox News Digital, highlighted the incident’s significance as part of her coverage of critical nationwide events. Koch has previously reported on various national crises, including wildfires in Los Angeles and aviation disasters in the Potomac and Hudson rivers.
