Wellington, New Zealand (AP) — Authorities in Australia have confiscated more than 100,000 live cockroaches from a single breeder, marking the nation’s largest-ever seizure of exotic invertebrates.
According to Australia’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water, the cockroaches, valued at 200,000 Australian dollars ($142,000), were found in May at a commercial breeding operation in Bathurst, New South Wales.
Exotic Species Description
The Madagascar hissing cockroaches, among those seized, can grow to lengths of 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 centimeters). Photos displayed by the department showed these shiny, brown insects, which can surpass the size of a person’s finger.
In contrast, the common Australian cockroach measures between 0.9 and 1.4 inches (2.3 and 3.6 centimeters) long. Australia’s warm sub-tropical climates support hundreds of native cockroach species.
Reasons for Breeding
Bathurst snake catcher Stefanie Lesser explained to the Australian Broadcasting Corp. that these larger cockroaches might be used as a cost-effective food source for reptiles, requiring fewer insects due to their size. Officials advise pet owners to choose alternative feeding options like crickets or wood roaches.
Biosecurity Concerns
Both Madagascar hissing and dubia cockroaches are illegal imports in Australia. Regardless of how they are obtained, breeding, selling, or keeping these species is not permitted.
Australia enforces strict biosecurity measures to protect its agricultural sectors and native ecosystems from pest risks. Importing undeclared or illegal animals, insects, or plants can result in heavy fines.
The department emphasized that exotic cockroaches could pose environmental risks and spread disease, necessitating further legal actions against those illegal possessions.
Legal and Environmental Actions
A department representative mentioned that no charges were pressed against the Bathurst breeder. However, officials plan to euthanize the confiscated cockroaches to prevent potential ecological harm.
