Controversy Over Austin Shooting Involving ICE

1 week ago 0

In Austin, Texas, elected Democrats have faced online backlash for criticizing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following an incident where an ICE officer shot a man. The incident occurred before the man was identified as Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, a suspected illegal immigrant.

Before investigations began, figures like Rep. Greg Casar, Councilman Mike Siegel, and Mayor Kirk Watson spoke out against ICE. During a press conference, Casar, affiliated with the progressive Squad caucus, expressed concern about the ICE presence in Austin.

“It is awful that this war has come to our doorstep,” Casar said. “For Austin to be safe, ICE should end its surge here in our community.”

Conservative voices criticized the Democrats on social media, accusing them of having selective outrage, especially regarding crimes by illegal immigrants. Tricia McLaughlin, a former Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security, questioned the lack of response to previous violent crimes.

Republican State Rep. Andy Hopper commented that such rhetoric is incompatible with the oath of office. Dennis Farris, from the Austin Police Retired Officers Association, criticized the Democrats and was particularly surprised by Mayor Watson’s response, which he felt intensified tensions in Austin.

Social media users reacted strongly to Watson’s post, expressing disappointment in his quick judgment prior to a full investigation. Austin lawyer Adam Loewy critiqued the haste of Watson’s statement, drawing parallels to leadership during past city events.

Farris dismissed claims of an ICE “surge” in Austin, stating that federal immigration operations have been consistent over the years. He suggested political motivations influenced the outcry rather than new actions by ICE.

Following the shooting, local authorities reported several arrests and injuries after protests ensued. Garces Perez, identified as an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, was reportedly involved in a delivery job when the shooting occurred. His attorney claims he was targeted by an unmarked truck before being shot.

Garces Perez entered the U.S. seeking asylum under the Biden administration, encountered legal complications with address changes, and is awaiting resolution of his immigration status. His lawyer aims to hold the agencies accountable while working on his legal matters.
