The New York Times recently faced criticism after publishing a Father’s Day guest essay titled “To My Daughter, My Gender Was Never Complicated.” The essay focuses on Zach Ellams, a biological woman identifying as male, sharing experiences of raising a daughter and addressing gender identity questions.
Told in comic-strip form, the story shows Ellams’ daughter asking questions like, “How long did you have breasts for, Dad?” and “How did you grow a mustache if you were a lady?” These interactions highlight the child’s acceptance of Ellams’ gender identity.
Critics questioned The Times’ choice of publishing such content on Father’s Day. Katie Miller, a podcaster, expressed concern over how the publication might influence children. Sean Davis, CEO of The Federalist, saw the essay as undermining traditional fatherhood.
Seth Dillon, CEO of The Babylon Bee, remarked on the paper’s focus. Tim Young, associated with The Heritage Foundation, criticized the essay’s timing too. President Donald Trump commented separately, criticizing The Times for its reporting on Iran.
The controversy is part of ongoing criticisms faced by The Times, including condemnation over an opinion column earlier this year.
