This spring, Ben Auer embraced the role of ace for St. Charles North. With the departure of top pitchers, Northwestern football recruit Keaton Reinke and Matt Ritchie, Auer stepped up. Initially, he filled the spot out of necessity, but over time, he became the definitive leader on the mound.
‘I’ve embraced the challenge throughout the year,’ Auer said, highlighting his growing confidence with each game. True to an ace’s form, Auer displayed an impressive performance. He struck out seven without a walk, allowed only five hits, and gave up one run over five innings. His efforts led the North Stars to a 3-2 victory against South Elgin in the Class 4A St. Charles North Regional championship.
Auer also shined at bat, contributing significantly to St. Charles North’s (22-12-1) 11th regional title. He went 3-for-4, driving in two runs. Teammate Ty Gleason added two hits, including a double, to the team’s success. Reed Raczka’s triple and two scored runs, along with Josh Kobylinski retiring the final five batters for the save, further secured the win. The North Stars are set to face Huntley (30-7) in the McHenry Sectional semifinals.
South Elgin’s Zacharia Barkho matched Auer’s effort with seven strikeouts over six innings. He conceded two earned runs, seven hits, and a walk. Alex Muro contributed two hits and an RBI for South Elgin (24-13).
Though Auer had limited pitching experience last season, St. Charles North coach Todd Genke recognized his potential. ‘He stepped up big time,’ Genke praised, noting Auer’s previous all-conference success in the outfield. This season, Auer confidently took on the ace role. He informed Genke, ‘Coach, I’ll step up. It’s my turn.’
Kobylinski described Auer’s impact as calming for the team. ‘He brought us all together,’ he said, emphasizing how Auer’s leadership allowed teammates to assume clear roles. South Elgin showed early aggression in the game, but Auer’s efficiency held them at bay. He stranded four runners in the first four innings.
Muro’s RBI single reduced the deficit to 3-1. Auer then delivered a key strikeout to close out the inning, handing control over to the bullpen. ‘It’s a great feeling,’ Auer stated, focusing on maintaining readiness for the next opportunity. Kobylinski took over in the sixth and executed flawlessly, retiring the final batters of the game.
‘Koby has been reliable all year,’ Auer remarked, demonstrating trust in his teammate’s abilities. South Elgin coach David Palmer commended his team for their fight, especially against strong pitching. ‘A few runs would have made the difference with the wind and the pitchers involved,’ Palmer noted, anticipating the challenges of a playoff game.
Auer welcomed the win as retribution for last year’s loss to South Elgin. ‘They beat us last year, so this was extra meaningful,’ Auer shared. ‘We’re eager for our next challenge on Wednesday.’
