Cape Verde, a small island nation located off the coast of Africa, recently celebrated an impressive result in the FIFA World Cup against Spain. With a population of over 524,800, the nation was overjoyed as their soccer team secured a 0-0 draw in their match against one of the tournament favorites, Spain, on Monday. This result marks one of the significant surprises in the tournament so far.

Cape Verde’s goalkeeper, Vozinha, at the age of 40, played a crucial role in the match by keeping Spain from scoring despite facing numerous shots in the first half. Spain managed seven shots on goal, while Cape Verde had only one, but none found the back of the net. Mikel Oyarzabal was responsible for five of Spain’s attempts, yet even Spanish standout Lamine Yamal, who began the game on the bench, couldn’t secure a goal against Cape Verde.
The match concluded with both teams earning one point in the Group H standings, complicating Spain’s progress as they await the outcome of the Saudi Arabia-Uruguay match later in the day.

This year marks Cape Verde’s debut in the World Cup. Historically a part of Portugal when the World Cup first began, Cape Verde did not become a FIFA member immediately. Their journey toward World Cup qualification began in 2002, culminating this year with the tournament expanding to 48 nations. Currently, Cape Verde stands 67th among FIFA members.
Spain, on the other hand, won the World Cup in 2010 when the tournament was held in South Africa. In more recent tournaments, Spain has only advanced as far as the round of 16. This year, Spain entered the World Cup as the second-ranked team, adding pressure to their campaign.
