Celebrations in Boston: Revisiting the Spirits of the Revolution

The city of Boston, recognized as the birthplace of the American Revolution, is gearing up for a summer filled with festive activities. As tourists flock to the city to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary, they may find themselves raising a glass in honor of the historic occasion.

Syd Williams, a bar manager, and Brooke Barbier, a historian, have teamed up to bring the taste of colonial-era cocktails into modern times. Their task of making these drinks appealing wasn’t the most challenging part; ensuring the legality of the concoctions was a priority. One evening at the Bell in Hand tavern, known as the oldest continuously operating tavern in the United States, Williams emphasized, “We can’t serve 16 ounces of alcohol in a glass.”

Visitors are arriving in droves to partake in various events planned in Boston. On Saturday, the annual Independence Day concert will take place at the Esplanade, setting the stage for patriotic celebrations. The following week, a parade of tall ships will grace Boston Harbor, offering a picturesque connection to the Revolutionary era. Concurrently, the city hosts six World Cup soccer matches, filling Boston with vibrant, enthusiastic crowds. However, these celebrations bring concerns regarding public safety due to excessive alcohol consumption.

“Those who find the festivities unbecoming of a significant national milestone may take solace in the fact that the founding fathers likely indulged in greater merriment,” remarked Barbier.

With several events marking this historical commemoration in Boston, visitors and locals alike are invited to experience both modern and colonial celebratory practices, all while maintaining respect for the city’s historical roots.
