1 hour ago 0

The upcoming Chicago Board of Education president election is notable as it marks the first time city residents can elect the president directly. Previously, the mayor appointed this position. The board president role is significant, influencing a 21-member body by determining board agendas covering contract approvals and budgeting decisions. The board’s oversight extends to 626 schools and impacts 304,000 students, making it the third-largest school district in the U.S.

The Candidates

Three candidates are vying for the presidency: Jessica Biggs, Hilario Dominguez, and Victor Henderson.

Jessica Biggs

Jessica Biggs is a former Chicago Public Schools principal and currently serves on the board, representing District 6B. Her plans emphasize prioritizing students, setting clear district goals, governing effectively, and achieving long-term financial stability. She strongly opposes mass school closures, citing past damage to communities. Biggs criticizes heavy reliance on state funding not guaranteed and calls for fiscal responsibility to reduce midyear cuts. She advocates for fair education funding, urging the state to contribute adequately.

Hilario Dominguez

Hilario Dominguez, formerly with the Chicago Teachers Union, prioritizes universal pre-K from age 3, improved school meals, and paid internships for high school students. He opposes further school closures due to past community harm. Dominguez supports a transparent budget process that includes TIF funding, pushing for state funds as per its own formula. He acknowledges property tax increases as necessary but emphasizes the need for state-level financial solutions.

Victor Henderson

Victor Henderson is a seasoned civil litigation attorney involved in educational administration. He focuses on enhancing student outcomes and restoring financial transparency and accountability in schools. Henderson does not support an indefinite moratorium on school closures, advocating for a measured approach with community considerations. He stresses the importance of secure state funding and prudent fiscal management while cautiously addressing potential property tax hikes.

These candidates bring varied experiences and perspectives, presenting distinct visions for Chicago’s educational future. Residents will decide who best aligns with their priorities during this landmark election.
