The Chicago Cubs are facing challenges with their bullpen due to injuries and performance issues. Closer Daniel Palencia is dealing with a mild flexor strain in his right arm and will not pitch for over a week, according to manager Craig Counsell. As the Cubs took on the Toronto Blue Jays at Wrigley Field, the absence of Palencia’s reliability was evident. The Cubs’ bullpen gave up an eight-run lead, resulting in an 8-6 defeat.
The bullpen’s difficulties were highlighted when pitchers Trent Thornton, Caleb Thielbar, and Jacob Webb conceded eight runs in just 1 2/3 innings. This led Counsell to express dissatisfaction, despite starter Colin Rea’s strong performance that initially positioned the team for a win.
“We didn’t have a good day in the bullpen,” Counsell said. “When you have three guys kind of have bad days, then we gave up a lot of runs because of it.”
Palencia’s placement on the injured list is part of a broader injury trend affecting the Cubs’ pitching staff. Notably, Hunter Harvey is sidelined with triceps inflammation, and Phil Maton has been struggling with a high ERA and is yet to be used in leverage situations recently. Despite these challenges, pitchers like Thornton and Webb had stepped up earlier, making Counsell initially confident in the bullpen against the Blue Jays.
During the game, Rea retired the first 12 hitters, setting a positive tone. However, Rolison’s timely double-play induction and the bullpen’s subsequent faltering disrupted the game plan. Counsell had envisioned Thornton, Thielbar, and Webb handling the final nine outs, but errors led to failure.
The bullpen’s struggles are part of a worrying trend this month marked by a 4.94 ERA and a high number of blown saves. For instance, Webb, who displayed strong performance in May, has faltered significantly in June, raising concerns about overall bullpen effectiveness.
Despite the setback against Toronto, there were positive signs, such as Pete Crow-Armstrong’s 16th home run and Matt Shaw’s contributions post-injury. Their offensive effort showed potential that was overshadowed by bullpen challenges. Webb addressed these struggles candidly:
“I didn’t [expletive] execute today, period. Plain and simple,” Webb said.
The Cubs are looking at upcoming rehab outings from other pitchers like Matthew Boyd, adding hope. Counsell acknowledges the urgency needed to resolve pitching issues amidst encouraging signs from the offensive lineup.
