The United States Coast Guard (USCG) announced that a 15-year-old boater was rescued after three individuals went missing off the coast of Alaska. Rescue personnel found the teenager clinging to the capsized vessel on Monday. The teenager was in the midst of a medical emergency.
Officials stated, “The survivor was rescued from the overturned skiff experiencing symptoms of hypothermia.”
The tragic incident also led to the discovery of two deceased mariners. Their 18-foot fishing vessel overturned approximately 4 miles east of St. Lawrence Island.
The Coast Guard launched a search mission early on Monday following notifications from Alaska State Troopers about an overdue boat reported on Sunday evening. The vessel was scheduled to return by 3 a.m. on Sunday.
Difficult weather and poor visibility delayed the rescue mission until Monday morning. Once conditions improved, an aircrew was dispatched, spotting the survivor and deploying a raft equipped with survival equipment.
A good Samaritan vessel played a crucial role in the operation, rescuing the teenager and recovering the bodies of the other two mariners from the water.
All individuals involved were subsequently brought to Nome, Alaska.
