Amy Gertner, wife of Democratic Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner, informed his campaign team in 2025 about sexual messages he had sent to other women. This revelation occurred during an internal vetting process at the start of his campaign. The Wall Street Journal initially reported Gertner’s disclosure.
In a statement from Gertner, shared by Platner’s campaign, she emphasized that their marriage, which began in November 2023, has grown stronger. ‘I know the man I married and the husband he has been to me on the best and the worst days of my life. That hasn’t changed, and it won’t,’ Gertner stated. She also mentioned sharing personal marriage details with a campaign staffer, feeling betrayed by the staffer’s invasion of privacy.
Graham Platner is expected to be the Democratic nominee against Republican Sen. Susan Collins in the upcoming November elections. This follows Maine Gov. Janet Mills dropping out of the primary race in April. Platner has faced criticism over controversial online comments and a military tattoo recognized as a Nazi symbol, which he later altered.
The Maine Senate race winner may significantly influence party control of the chamber post-midterms. Platner’s campaign has received endorsements from progressive Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. His platform focuses on his working-class roots. In an interview on CBS News’ ‘The Takeout,’ Platner attributed past controversial views to post-traumatic stress disorder and his military service’s hyper-masculine environment. He admitted that his humor and opinions were shaped by this background but have since evolved with further life experiences.
