Controversy Surrounds Washington’s Reflecting Pool After Renovation

WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington’s Reflecting Pool, refurbished under directives from former President Donald Trump, faces fresh challenges as paint begins to peel. Trump has claimed vandalism as the source of the damage.

On Friday, Trump expressed concerns via social media, stating, “We’ve had some real problems with vandalism at the beautiful Reflecting Pool.” He cited recent destruction to the adjacent grass and alleged further harm to the pool’s surface.

Trump did not provide evidence backing his accusations. The U.S. Park Police, National Park Service, and Interior Department, responsible for maintenance of the National Mall, have not yet commented on the matter.

Despite no official statements from authorities, the Washington Post reported an arrest made by Park Police on Friday. The individual was allegedly peeling paint from the pool. However, this act alone does not account for the algae bloom and widespread paint peeling.

Trump maintained that these acts were deliberate, akin to the previous incident where “86 47” was found etched in discolored grass on the National Mall. This combination of numbers could be interpreted as a threat, with “86” possibly suggesting removal.

In response to the algae bloom, federal workers have treated the pool to restore the water’s blue hue. However, the treatment has revealed patches of the pool’s rocky base where paint has failed to adhere.

The ongoing turmoil occurs as the U.S. prepares for its 250th anniversary celebrations. Visitors observed National Park Service employees using vacuums to clean the pool, highlighting the ongoing maintenance efforts. Officers from the Oklahoma City Police Department were also present, assisting with local law enforcement efforts near the Reflecting Pool.
