Corey Heim’s First Cup Series Triumph at Naval Base Coronado

1 week ago 0

Corey Heim made a memorable entrance in the inaugural NASCAR race at Naval Base Coronado, overcoming early collisions with the wall to secure his first Cup Series victory in just his 13th start. Despite damaging his tires, Heim’s No. 67 Toyota progressively gained speed, surprising many with its resilience.

Heim, a 23-year-old emerging racing talent from Marietta, Georgia, maintained his calm throughout the race. As he geared up for the second half, he reflected on his experience, equating it with that of seasoned competitors amidst the challenging 16-turn track on Coronado Island, near downtown San Diego.

Expressing his disbelief, Heim mused, “I’m speechless. Maybe I knocked some good into the car.” Entering the race with optimism, Heim reevaluated his strategy and focused on achieving victory.

Moving full time into Cup racing next season with 23XI Racing, Heim sealed his win by leading the final three laps after overtaking teammate Tyler Reddick. “I was able to stick with him, and five to go came, and it was time to put some pressure on him and see if I could get him to make a mistake,” Heim noted, describing how Reddick’s error gave him the chance to lead.

Bubba Wallace secured second place, contributing to a successful 1-2 finish for 23XI Racing, supported by Denny Hamlin and basketball icon Michael Jordan.

Reddick faced challenges with a flat tire, impacting his end position, dropping him to 25th and narrowing his lead in the series standings to eight points over Hamlin. Reflecting on the situation, Reddick shared, “First and foremost, congratulations to Corey. I thought I was going to be able to hold him off there. It definitely stings. Really needed a good points day.”

This marks the second occurrence in three years where an inaugural street race in NASCAR’s premier series has resulted in a first-time winner. Shane van Gisbergen achieved the feat during the 2023 Chicago Street Race. With this victory, Heim joins Ty Gibbs (Bristol) and Carson Hocevar (Talladega) as first-time winners this season.

Heim’s win caught the attention of his fellow racers, including Kyle Larson, a two-time Cup champion, who praised Heim’s prowess stating, “Awesome job by Corey Heim. That’s really cool. He’s a super talented race car driver.”

Zane Smith and AJ Allmendinger rounded out the top five, demonstrating their skill at the challenging street course.

Among the notable finishes, Denny Hamlin completed the race in 14th, after winning previous races for Joe Gibbs Racing.

SVG Stunner

Shane van Gisbergen finished 38th in pursuit of an eighth road or street course victory, aiming to lead active Cup drivers in this category. Starting from the pole, van Gisbergen was part of a crash initiated by Trackhouse Racing teammate Connor Zilisch and Austin Hill. The incident led to a nine-minute pause for wall repairs.

Zilisch voiced his disappointment, “I felt like I was giving Austin space, and the next thing, I was in the wall.” Despite leading the first eight laps, Zilisch’s rookie season has witnessed a mix of highs and lows.

Driver Swap

During a caution, Christopher Bell was replaced by Brent Crews in the No. 20 Toyota. However, Crews faced a short stint due to a gearbox issue, finishing last. Bell is recuperating from a wrist injury sustained on June 7 at Michigan International Speedway, emphasizing that exiting the car was precautionary.

One More for Johnson

Jimmie Johnson, seven-time series champion, concluded his second Cup start of 2026 by crashing into a barrier, finishing 28th. Johnson remains optimistic for his planned final Cup appearance at the 2027 Daytona 500, while considering participation in other racing series.

Up Next

NASCAR continues its journey in California, preparing for the next race at Sonoma Raceway on June 28. Van Gisbergen, known for his road course expertise, aims to replicate last season’s success, where he dominated the race by leading 97 of 110 laps.
