Lineup Changes Attempt to Revitalize Cubs

Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell is exploring new methods to invigorate his team’s slumping offensive performance. Before Saturday’s game against the Houston Astros, Counsell made several lineup changes. Ian Happ was given a day off due to his ongoing difficulties, while newly called-up prospects remained on the bench to start the game. Despite these adjustments, the Cubs lost 3-0, marking their seventh consecutive defeat and 11th in the last 13 games.

Manager’s Strategy and Player Responses

Regarding the lineup shuffle, leadoff hitter Pete Crow-Armstrong commented, “I appreciate Counsell’s willingness to shake it up.” Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong received consolation from Counsell after striking out in the ninth inning. Counsell had hinted at lineup changes following Friday’s loss, acknowledging, “We were at that point.”

Altered Lineup Fails to Spark Offense

Saturday’s lineup adjustments were significant by Counsell’s standards. Nico Hoerner, typically the leadoff hitter in most games this season, was moved to fourth place. Crow-Armstrong started as the leadoff hitter for the first time this season, while Michael Conforto took Happ’s position in left field. Despite these changes, the Cubs offense struggled, managing only three hits and failing to get runners into scoring position.

Christian Walker’s two home runs against Cubs starter Colin Rea helped the Astros establish a three-run lead that proved difficult for the Cubs to overcome. Counsell remarked, “Anytime you get seven innings from your starter, you’re thinking you’re in pretty good shape. But right now, what we’re doing offensively, it’s too much.”

Hope to Overcome Slump Despite Frustration

Despite recent struggles, Counsell remains optimistic about the team’s ability to break out of their slump: “We’ve struggled as a team for two weeks, and while frustrating, it’s still two weeks. We’re going to come out of this. It’s going to be fine.” Cubs players, including right fielder Seiya Suzuki, maintain focus and perseverance amidst the team’s offensive dry spell.

Roster Adjustments and Player Outlook

The Cubs have also made roster changes, recalling outfielder Kevin Alcántara and designating infielder Nicky Lopez for assignment. Infield prospect Pedro Ramírez was called up following Matt Shaw’s placement on the injured list. Alcántara and Ramírez both participated as pinch hitters during the game.

Alcántara expressed his readiness to contribute to the team, saying, “I’m going to be ready for any moment that they give me an opportunity to help the team.” Despite Counsell’s efforts, players acknowledge their role in turning things around. Crow-Armstrong commented, “I don’t really think there’s many adjustments that need to be made from anybody’s process or swing.”
