The Philadelphia Eagles have sidelined quarterback Jalen Hurts after he was diagnosed with a superficial blood clot. This condition will force Hurts to miss at least four games.
The Eagles announced this on Thursday, mentioning that Hurts had been under treatment for nearly a week. He even managed to fly to and from London with the condition.
Despite playing against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London, and fully participating in practice on Wednesday, Hurt’s absence was confirmed on Thursday. He won’t participate in Sunday’s game.
“On Thursday, October 8th, Jalen visited the training room for calf treatment. He informed staff of an injury during the Rams game on October 4th. This was his first treatment post-game. He practiced fully both Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, he practiced again and was included in the practice report,” the team statement read.
An ultrasound conducted on Saturday, during the team’s London trip, revealed the blood clot. Medical staff concluded that Hurts could safely play, recommending a follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours.
Hurts played normally on Sunday, continued treatment on Monday and Tuesday, and practiced fully on Wednesday. However, a follow-up ultrasound on Wednesday night showed movement in the clot.
“Jalen will miss the game against the Panthers. We’ll decide the treatment course. His health and safety are our highest priority,” the statement explained.
Hurts will miss matchups against the Panthers and NFC East rivals, eligible to return in Week 11 against the Steelers.
Blood clots can obstruct blood flow to vital organs, risking pulmonary embolism, stroke, or heart attack. Immediate treatment is crucial.
Tanner McKee, with two career starts, will start against the Panthers. McKee has one win and one loss in his name.
The Eagles are also missing DeVonta Smith and Saquon Barkley, adding to their challenges.
