Europe is experiencing an unusual and intense heatwave that is breaking temperature records, including in the United Kingdom. On Monday, the UK faced soaring temperatures, prompting government warnings after heat-related fatalities were reported at amateur sports events in France.
French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari expressed condolences to the family of a runner who passed away during a race in Paris on Sunday. A report by Le Parisien indicated that the 53-year-old runner suffered a heart attack during the event in the city’s 20th arrondissement, and rescue efforts by firefighters were unsuccessful. While the exact cause of the runner’s death was undetermined, Ferrari suggested a possible link to the heat. She emphasized the need for caution when engaging in sports during extreme heat.
Another incident was reported in Lyon, as per Actu Lyon, where a woman succumbed to heat stroke on Sunday during a sports competition. This highlights the rising dangers of participating in outdoor sports during such extreme weather conditions.
Meteo France, the national weather service, reported that record-breaking temperatures for May have exceeded 30°C (86°F) in many areas, with the high heat expected to persist throughout the week.
In the United Kingdom, a new record for the hottest May temperature was set on Monday, with a peak of 33.5°C (92.3°F) recorded at London’s Heathrow Airport. This broke the previous record of 32.8°C (91.4°F), set in 1922 and replicated in 1944. As a response, the UK Health Security Agency issued its first amber health alert of the year, cautioning about increased mortality risks, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
Experts note that such extreme weather events are becoming more frequent as global warming progresses. These unprecedented weather extremes, occurring at unexpected times and in unusual places, are increasing risks for many populations.
