The Pentagon has awarded Raytheon a $6.3 billion contract to produce Standard Missile-3 Block IB (SM-3 Blk IB) interceptors. This multi-year procurement agreement aims to enhance the defense capabilities of the U.S. military.
Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment, Michael P. Duffey, stated, “Our warfighters must never face a fair fight, and the SM-3 Blk IB has proven its operational superiority to dominate any adversary across the globe.” The contract provides production certainty and aims to eliminate manufacturing bottlenecks. It also ensures that fleets have access to the interceptors needed to dominate air, sea, or land battle spaces.
SM-3 interceptors are designed to take down short or medium-range ballistic missiles, either at sea or on land. They have been crucial for U.S. Navy destroyers dealing with Iranian ballistic threats during ongoing conflicts. The SM-3 B variant, introduced in 2014, comes with an enhanced two-color infrared seeker and improved steering and propulsion, using short bursts to reach targets efficiently.
The contract will span five years, with an option for two additional years. The Pentagon highlighted the benefits of this contract, including reduced supply-chain friction and increased private sector capacity. Investments will focus on assembly lines and critical domestic suppliers, among others.
This development underscores the Pentagon’s commitment to strengthening the defense industrial base, ensuring that America stays ahead in military capabilities.
