2 weeks ago 0

Andrew Lewis, a prominent figure in the extreme sports community, tragically lost his life during a BASE jumping accident. The incident occurred in a remote canyon in southeastern Utah over the weekend. Lewis gained fame for his stunt-filled performance at the Super Bowl halftime show with Madonna in 2012.

Local authorities responded to the accident on Sunday. They reported to Mineral Bottom, a secluded desert area located within a canyon in Grand County, Utah. Two individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. They were identified as Andrew Lewis, 39, of Moab, Utah, and Danny Joe Kregle, who was in his 50s, according to the county sheriff’s office.

Andrew Lewis was renowned for his achievements in extreme tightrope walking. He often performed daring feats on thin lines high above water bodies and deserts. Additionally, he operated an adventure sports company named BASE Jump Moab. The business offers BASE jumping excursions, a high-risk sport involving parachuting from various structures and natural formations.

Upon reaching the location, authorities found Mr. Kregle connected to Mr. Lewis in what seemed to be a tandem BASE jump. Jamison Wiggins, the Grand County sheriff, stated that Mr. Kregle succumbed to the impact. Meanwhile, Mr. Lewis survived for approximately three hours as medical personnel attempted to save him.

The cause of death for both individuals is still under investigation by the sheriff’s office, as noted by Sheriff Wiggins. The nature of the relationship between Mr. Kregle and Mr. Lewis, commonly referred to as Andy, remains unclear.

Mineral Bottom is a favored location for BASE jumping, although it presents significant challenges. The area lacks cellular service and is situated nearly an hour away from Moab, Utah. Deputies have previously attended to other BASE jumping mishaps in this location.
