Federal authorities have announced plans to arrest and prosecute an individual who vandalized a section of the National Mall. The perpetrator inscribed “8647” on the grass, a symbol linked to President Donald Trump.
The Department of the Interior confirmed the investigation in a statement to Newsweek. “The deranged vandalism on our National Mall will not be tolerated,” officials stated. “Any threat against the President is taken very seriously by the Department, and our U.S. Park Police will investigate this incident and hold those responsible accountable.”
According to department officials, the U.S. Park Police were notified of the vandalism on the Washington Monument’s west lawn at approximately 11:30 a.m. “The numbers ‘8647’ were marked in the grass,” the agency noted. “The cause of the discoloration has not yet been determined. Grass samples have been collected for testing. The investigation is ongoing.”
Online photos reveal that three digits are clearly visible, though the “4” is not well-defined. The timing of this reference to Trump coincides with anticipated large gatherings for a UFC event in Washington on Sunday, close to the president’s 80th birthday.
The numbers “8647” have previously been used publicly by critics, including former FBI Director James Comey. Comey was charged in April by the Department of Justice for posting a photo of “8647” in seashells on social media last year.
“Threatening the life of the President of the United States is a grave violation of our nation’s laws,” acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche stated in April. “The grand jury returned an indictment alleging James Comey did just that, at a time when this country has witnessed violent incitement followed by deadly actions against President Trump and other elected officials.”
Other Trump administration figures, such as FBI Director Kash Patel, claimed in April that Comey’s actions “disgracefully encouraged” a threat by spreading the term “86,” which suggests doing away with something. Comey, a strong critic of the 47th president, removed the post from Instagram, maintaining he was unaware of the numbers’ violent associations.
Comey, 65, faces charges of threatening the president and transmitting a threat in interstate commerce, with a potential 10-year prison sentence if convicted. He has denied the charges and awaits trial in October.
Last week, a federal judge ruled that the National Park Service cannot prohibit protesters from displaying an “86-47” flag near the National Mall. U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss decided the symbol could not reasonably be seen as promoting political violence. His ruling, originating from a flag outside a federal courthouse, restricts NPS officials from removing it for 14 days under a temporary restraining order.
