Florida Woman Survives Alligator Attack at Silver River

A 58-year-old woman, Dina Rae Spann, lost her right arm during a violent encounter with an alligator while swimming in Silver River, Florida, over the weekend. The attack occurred in Marion County as Spann was swimming with a group, according to reports.

Spann’s son, Zach Guerrina, described his mother’s efforts to keep the predator’s jaws closed while struggling to surface for air. Despite her bravery, the alligator inflicted severe injuries. Spann’s right arm required amputation below the elbow, and she sustained a partial loss of her ring finger on her left hand.

Nearby, John Gamache and his father were lunching on their boat when they heard cries for help. Gamache witnessed the alligator rapidly approaching the swimmers and immediately acted. Upon reaching the group, he found Spann gripping a paddleboard, with a grave arm injury.

Gamache used rope from his boat as an impromptu tourniquet, helping to stem the bleeding. He emphasized the critical nature of immediate action, stating, “It was a terrible injury, with bones exposed and blood everywhere. Obviously, the minutes mattered.”

Despite the harrowing incident, Guerrina mentioned his mother remained calm, aiding the rescue effort. Once all the swimmers were safely on board, Gamache transported them to a nearby boat launch where emergency services awaited.

Following the attack, authorities briefly closed Silver River. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission removed a 9-foot-8-inch alligator from the area. Subsequently, the temporary river closure was lifted.

Reflecting on the event, Gamache noted it was unlike anything he had previously experienced in the area. Spann’s family expressed gratitude for his swift actions that potentially saved her life.

By Sunday, Spann was home, maintaining a positive spirit despite her injuries. Her family reached out to Gamache, sharing their emotional journey and appreciation for his bravery.
