A homecoming weekend block party in Vienna, central Georgia, turned tragic early Sunday when gunfire left two people dead and 35 others injured. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) reported the incident occurred around 1:25 a.m. on the 900 block of Pine Street. The event unfolded in Dooly County, located roughly 100 miles south of Atlanta.
Dooly County Sheriff’s deputies, who were on patrol at the event, responded to the chaos as shots rang out. The Dooly County School System’s Superintendent, Dr. Sherrod Willaford, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, offering condolences to the victims’ families and clarifying that the district did not sponsor the gathering.
This marks one of Georgia’s deadliest mass shootings this year, amid ongoing national challenges with gun violence at public events. According to the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), a mass shooting involves four or more victims, excluding the shooter.
Details of the Incident
The two deceased victims were discovered in the 600 block of Pine Street and were pronounced dead on-site. Authorities have not released their identities. Their bodies are set to undergo autopsies at the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office.
Officials have yet to identify a motive or disclose whether multiple assailants were involved. Democratic State Representative Patty Stinson, who represents the area, expressed her heartbreak over the incident and extended her sympathies to affected families.
The Homecoming Celebration
The shooting took place during a block party associated with Dooly County High School’s homecoming festivities. Sheriff Craig Peavy reported that over 1,000 individuals attended the celebration and at least 50 shots were fired. Deputies responded quickly once the shooting began.
During the frenzy, some individuals were injured while attempting to flee, with reports of some victims being hit by vehicles. Victims were transported to various regional hospitals for medical care.
School District’s Response
Superintendent Willaford emphasized the implementation of extra safety measures as students return to school. Crisis support teams have been activated to aid students and staff affected by the event.
The district urged the community to respect the privacy of those impacted and avoid disseminating unverified information or graphic content on social media. Families in need of support were encouraged to contact their school’s counselor or principal. Willaford highlighted the importance of community members engaging with students and families for continued emotional support.
“Our hearts are with the families grieving the loss of loved ones, those who were injured, and everyone affected by this tragedy,” said Willaford. “A caring conversation, a listening ear, and continued support can make a meaningful difference.”
Investigation Ongoing
The investigation, led by the GBI and Dooly County Sheriff’s Office, remains active. Authorities urged anyone with information to contact the agency’s Regional Investigative Office in Perry. Once the investigation concludes, findings will be reviewed by the Cordele Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for potential prosecution.
