Flynn Meyer, after serving four years as the starting varsity goalkeeper for Lincoln-Way Central, is ready to transition from soccer to diving at Southern Illinois. She departs with fond memories and pride in her team’s performance during what was her most significant match yet.
“We really battled until the end,” Meyer expressed. “All the seniors can be proud of our final game. We gave everything we had. No complaints. I am proud of us for coming together and reaching this point.”
Meyer achieved nine saves during Monday night’s game as the Knights held Edwardsville scoreless for 100 minutes. Ultimately, Edwardsville clinched a 1-0 win via a 3-1 victory in the penalty-kick shootout during the Class 3A Bloomington Supersectional.
Ella Forystek, Jolie Kolosh, Aly Sudkamp, and Millikin recruit Taylor Watt were pivotal in leading the defensive front for Lincoln-Way Central (19-3-1). Jules Rafacz scored the team’s single successful penalty kick in the shootout.
It’s not just about championships. Building families in every sport is the best part.
Lincoln-Way Central topped off a season that included their second sectional title in five years and a flawless 8-0 championship run in the SouthWest Suburban Conference, all under the guidance of first-year coach Breanna Bembenek. Meyer reflected, “Having a new coaching staff was nerve-racking, but we managed well. We were more than teammates; we were best friends, and that unity propelled us forward.”
Meyer acknowledged the contributions of senior Genny Burroughs, whose three saves in the shootout pushed Edwardsville (16-3-2) forward to the state level.
Bembenek praised Meyer’s leadership, noting, “Flynn was indispensable for us. Much of our success was due to her efforts in net. Across our conference games, she allowed only one goal in eight matches. How fortunate we were to have her.”
Meyer was a three-sport athlete, partaking in soccer, gymnastics, and diving during her tenure at Lincoln-Way Central. Despite not envisioning her future in diving, she feels prepared for collegiate competition. “The high-stakes moments in soccer have prepared me for similar situations in diving,” she explained.
While Meyer and other senior members are leaving, the team’s future looks bright. They featured seven underclassmen, showcasing talents such as Rafacz and a majority of their defensive lineup. Junior defender Sudkamp stressed the importance of carrying the momentum into next season, asserting, “We have to be ready to work hard again.” Meyer will support them, cherishing her time and friendships.
