In a challenging first half against Senegal, the French national team turned the tide in the second half of their opening match in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Leading the charge was Kylian Mbappe, who kicked off his World Cup campaign with two crucial goals.
Mbappe, acclaimed for his goal-scoring prowess, began with an expertly executed shot set up by Michael Olise. Olise’s precise through ball allowed Mbappe to find the back of the net in the 66th minute, establishing the lead for France. Mbappe then added another goal in stoppage time, securing France’s 3-1 victory.
With these goals, Mbappe attained several career milestones. He surpassed Olivier Giroud’s record for the most goals scored by a player for the French national team, achieving a total of 58 goals. As reported by ESPN Insights, he also became the first player to have five matches with two or more goals in World Cup history, according to The Athletic.
Additionally, Mbappe climbed the ranks in the all-time World Cup scorers list, surpassing France’s Just Fontaine and Argentina’s Lionel Messi, each of whom had scored 13 World Cup goals. Although Mbappe has scored 14 goals in three World Cups, Messi matched his total later in the day by scoring in Argentina’s match against Algeria.
While goal counts are important, they don’t fully define a player’s World Cup legacy. Mbappe has achieved these goals more rapidly compared to Messi, who has participated in six World Cups. Both players have one World Cup title to their names: Mbappe won with France in 2018 during his debut World Cup, whereas Messi led Argentina to victory in 2022.
Mbappe’s performance in this World Cup is vital for his legacy. He is aware of the pressure and responsibilities that come with leading his nation on this stage. Reflecting on the tournament, Mbappe expressed his ambition: “At the end of the day, you need to feel this pressure to do something special,” he shared in an interview with FOX’s Jenny Taft. “It’s my objective… to put my country at the top of the world.”
