In a ceremonious tribute, a gold ring adorned with 321 diamonds, 56 sapphires, 13 emeralds, and six rubies was presented to Bill White, the U.S. ambassador to Belgium. The piece commemorates the United States’ 250th birthday.
The design features significant American symbols. The letters ‘T’ mirror the Stars and Stripes, accompanied by the years ‘1776’ and ‘2026’. Numbers ’45’ and ’47’ are framed in Superman’s logo style. An eagle with diamond wings holds a ruby shield, grasping an olive branch of emeralds beneath a radiant ‘250’. The phrase “250 YEARS USA” is inscribed in 18-karat gold.
U.S. President Donald Trump, in a video message, expressed gratitude saying, “A very special thank you to my friends from Antwerp for the magnificent Freedom 250 ring.” Isidore Mörsel, president of the Antwerp World Diamond Center (AWDC), presented the ring. Mörsel noted, “May this ring serve as a lasting reminder that true partnership, like the finest natural diamonds, are formed under pressure and endure the test of time.” Inside the ring, the engraving reads “Crafted in Antwerp for Donald John Trump.”
The ring’s value, estimated by independent jewelers, ranges from $25,000 to $35,000 due to the high-quality materials and craftsmanship. This gift not only symbolizes opulence but also reflects a strategic win for Belgium’s diamond industry. AWDC had successfully secured a zero percent import tariff on its $2 billion annual polished diamond exports to the U.S., removing previous hurdles from Trump’s trade policies.
While lavish gifts often seek to gain favor, U.S. presidents must navigate the intricacies of gift acceptance policies. Gifts from foreign governments generally require congressional approval, though personal gifts can be retained with reimbursement to the Treasury.
The Freedom 250 ring, created by David Gotlib, an esteemed jeweler in Antwerp, remains unvalued by its makers. Yet, experts such as Alexander Levinson and David Saad provided their estimates based on the materials’ and labor’s contributions.
The ring presentation event in Brussels featured musical performances, including the U.S. national anthem by Alexis Wilkins, with over 8,000 attendees enjoying refreshments. Funded by corporate sponsors like Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, the event celebrated American grandeur.
Ambassador White plans to display the ring in the Oval Office after its presentation to Trump. His social media post exclaims the event’s scale, underscoring the motto, “Because we are the United States of America!”
