UFC’s special event, Freedom 250, was a landmark occasion held at the White House in celebration of President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday and the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The evening included an impressive display of merchandise sales and streaming service subscriptions, meeting and even surpassing UFC’s goals, according to CEO Dana White.
Justin Gaethje emerged victorious in the main event, defeating Ilia Topuria to claim the UFC lightweight title. He celebrated his win with a backflip from the wire-mesh cage, followed by a handshake with President Trump. Gaethje also earned substantial bonus money, totaling $825,000, for his performance.
The event saw fighters touring prominent areas of the White House, such as the West Wing and the Oval Office, and included a meet-and-greet with the President. Trump expressed satisfaction with the event through his platform, Truth Social.
“It was an amazing, one-of-a-kind experience,” Dana White stated. “It will never happen again.”
While the event was largely successful, some issues arose involving UFC’s controversial fighters. Sean Strickland was escorted out of the Ellipse watch party by police, and Josh Hokit made unwarranted claims about former First Lady Michelle Obama.
The occasion featured patriotic elements, such as performances from the Marine Band and tributes to various heroes, namely first responders and active military members. Despite mixed public perceptions, White emphasized the unity and celebration at this unique event.
White confirmed that future UFC events will return to traditional venues, like Las Vegas, highlighting the logistical and financial challenges of hosting such an elaborate event at the White House. UFC’s upcoming International Fight Week will mark the return of Conor McGregor at UFC 329, continuing the organization’s history of large-scale events.
