As the TPS expiration loomed, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced plans to intensify operations to detain and deport Haitian migrants. This information comes from ICE sources and federal documents acquired by CBS News.
“I was six years old when I first arrived,” said the woman anonymously. She disclosed having no family left in Haiti. The TPS program aimed to protect Haitians fleeing violence. However, despite its termination, the State Department’s Level 4 travel advisory still warns against travel to Haiti.
Recent statistics from the United Nations highlight troubling conditions, reporting 613 gang-related killings in Haiti from March to July. Additionally, basic services in violence-affected areas have shut down. Florida hosts one of the largest Haitian communities in the U.S., notably in Little Haiti, Miami.
The woman expressed her plight, stating, “I wouldn’t have anywhere to go” if returned to Haiti. Despite TPS’s temporary nature, she believes that pursuing legal status often involves temporary processes. Losing her job due to TPS expiration has left her without income. Her health insurance is set to lapse, complicating her high-risk pregnancy requiring weekly medical visits.
Her partner’s U.S. citizenship assures that her child will be American, regardless of the birthplace. Reflecting on her situation, she says, “Yes, I do feel like I’m American,” highlighting her longstanding connection to the U.S. As she shelters, Miami’s Little Haiti shows stark changes. Vibrant streets have grown deserted, with residents venturing outdoors only for urgent needs. She considers forgoing her necessary medical appointments due to financial strain.
The community faces an uncertain future as it grapples with the consequences of the TPS program’s conclusion.
