For St. Charles East’s Hannah Wulf, throwing a no-hitter through five innings almost went unnoticed. She faced challenges throughout but managed a one-hitter, securing a 1-0 win against Fremd in the Class 4A Bartlett Sectional championship.
Wulf, committed to South Carolina, was unaware of her no-hitter until informed after Fremd’s sole hit. “I try not to think about a no-hitter during the game,” Wulf explained. “It’s a superstition for me, and I focus on each pitch.”
On Saturday, Wulf struck out eight and allowed numerous base runners, hitting four batters and walking two. The senior left-hander achieved one 1-2-3 inning, which was the first.
“In crucial moments, she was clutch,” noted St. Charles East coach Jarod Gutesha. “Both pitchers performed well, making the 1-0 score a testament to their abilities.” Fremd’s Molly Kanupke, a senior right-hander, struck out six, conceding five hits and three walks, ending the season at 19-8-1.
Morgan Beers of St. Charles East scored in the sixth inning. The team now prepares to face Marist, ranked 35-1, in a supersectional game.
“It was a tense game with multiple hit-by-pitches,” Wulf said, acknowledging her errors against Fremd’s Emily Usalis. Coach Gutesha added that Wulf’s pitching style sometimes resulted in curveballs and fastballs running in on right-handed batters, leading to unintended hit-by-pitches.
Fremd left seven runners on base, with Wulf’s toughest moment in the fifth inning. She hit the leadoff batter and allowed a single by Audrie Corrado, but struck out the following three batters to escape the jam.
“I focused more intently after that,” Wulf said about her strategy with catcher Hayden Sujack guiding her. “Hayden called a great game, and our defense held strong.” Lexi Majkszak, a senior right fielder, was pivotal in handling two hard-hit balls, further aiding the defense.
Sujack, also heading to South Carolina, contributed with walks and key hits. In the sixth, her actions advanced Beers to third, eventually leading to an unearned run and the win.
Sujack praised Wulf’s aggressive pitching style. “I prefer her occasional wild pitches because that means her stuff is effective. Her curveball stands out as a particularly ‘dirty pitch.’”
As St. Charles East advances to face Marist, Wulf remains optimistic. “They’re a strong team, but on any given day, anyone can win. We’re looking forward to it.”
