A House Judiciary Committee hearing on sanctuary city policies turned confrontational on Tuesday as Representatives Mike Lawler and Jamie Raskin engaged in a heated exchange. They accused each other of insensitivity toward the deaths caused by illegal immigrants and federal agents.
During the session, Lawler criticized his fellow committee members for their perceived indifference toward the fatalities of Laken Riley and Sheridan Gorman. Both women were reportedly victims of crimes committed by illegal immigrants. He pointed out their apparent focus on the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, who were anti-ICE activists killed by federal agents in Minnesota earlier this year.
“So while some of my colleagues may not want to hear the truth, the same outrage you feel about Renee Good and Alex Pretti, you should feel about Sheridan Gorman and Laken Riley and every Angel family in this country,” Lawler stated.
The interaction between Lawler and Raskin escalated when Raskin challenged Lawler’s earlier remarks. Raskin expressed that he too felt the same outrage, and insisted that Lawler did not. In response, Lawler attacked Raskin’s support for sanctuary jurisdictions as contradictory to his claimed concerns.
Lawler penned a New York Times op-ed on January 27 addressing the deaths of Good and Pretti. He described their deaths as both tragic and preventable, calling for a reassessment of current law enforcement tactics by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection.
Raskin is a known advocate for sanctuary policies. He supports measures that protect illegal immigrants, including those detained for crimes, from federal immigration enforcement. Raskin frequently argues that forcing local law enforcement to implement federal immigration laws is not constitutional.
