How Generative AI is Boosting Internet Scams and What You Can Do About It

Detecting scams on the internet now demands a different strategy. Traditional red flags like typos, strong accents, or unclear photos are no longer reliable indicators. Generative artificial intelligence has made such warning signs almost obsolete. With affordable tools like chatbots, image creators, and voice-cloning software, fraudsters can easily generate professional content, construct realistic websites, and mimic identities.

AI-driven scams have become incredibly convincing. Here’s an example from my own experience. I nearly got duped while leisurely browsing TikTok. An ad appeared for Hoka sneakers offered at an 80 percent discount. Clicking on the ad took me to a website that seemed to be an official clearance outlet for the brand. However, as soon as I added the shoes to the cart, my instincts kicked in. A quick online search showed that Reddit users reported this site as a scam. Hoka had also issued a warning about an influx of fraudulent sites imitating theirs.

Such impersonating sites are just one type of AI-enhanced internet scams. Security specialists are alarmed by their rapid increase. According to a recent FBI report, in the past year alone, cybercriminals extorted nearly $21 billion from Americans. Approximately $893 million of these losses were associated with AI tactics.

Given that AI simplifies the creation of digital platforms and personas, it’s crucial to adjust our methods for safeguarding against online deception.
