National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigators have highlighted a critical timeline where pilots of an Amazon cargo jet at Miami International Airport lost control, eventually leading to a runway overrun. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, resulted in five fatalities as the plane crossed airport boundaries and collided with two vehicles.
Pilots’ Actions Under Scrutiny
The detailed findings suggest that the pilots were not fully in control during touchdown. Observations indicate that an attempt to abort the landing occurred temporarily, contributing to the crisis. This maneuver cost valuable runway length and time, leading to the disaster.
“You either land or go around. You don’t attempt both. It points to potential mechanical issues,” commented Steven Arroyo, a retired United Airlines pilot.
Arroyo emphasized the unusual nature of the event, citing the investigators’ data as unprecedented in his experience.
Anticipated Investigator Actions
The NTSB plans to release the cockpit voice recorder’s transcript. This data will provide further insights into the moments before the crash. Interviews with the aircraft’s pilots are also scheduled as part of ongoing investigations, according to NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy.
Chihoon Shin, leading the investigation, explained that the last 30 seconds of flight data were preserved up to the crash moment, as the recorder ceases on electrical power loss.
