In a tragic incident, Israeli troops shot and killed a seven-month-old Palestinian baby boy in the occupied West Bank, as reported by the Palestinian health ministry. The incident occurred on Friday evening in the Tel Rumeida area south of Hebron City. The child’s parents were also injured during the incident.
Details of the Incident
The official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that the baby, Sam Fahd Abu Haikal, was critically injured when the bullet that wounded his mother struck his face. The child later succumbed to his injuries. The father, Fahd Abu Haikal, a lecturer at Bethlehem University, suffered a gunshot wound to his hand. The family was on their way from Bethlehem to Hebron to visit relatives when soldiers fired at them.
Photos from the Associated Press depict damage to the family’s vehicle, including a bullet hole in the windshield. The car seat of the baby was located behind the driver’s seat.
Military Operations Intensification
Since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages, Israel has intensified military operations in the West Bank. The Gaza conflict has led to over 72,900 Palestinian deaths, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. This ministry, allied with the Hamas-led government, is generally trusted by UN agencies and experts.
IDF Response
A spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces stated that the troops perceived a vehicle accelerating towards them in the Hebron region. In response, a soldier discharged single shots, injuring three Palestinians. The IDF did not specify the age or gender of those injured. Their preliminary investigation revealed that the injured were civilians uninvolved in any hostilities. The IDF expressed profound regret concerning any harm to non-combatants and reported that the incident is under evaluation.
At Al-Ahly Hospital in Hebron, the child’s father recounted to the Associated Press how the bullet went through the car’s windshield, injuring both him and his family members. The bullet’s path seriously injured his wife and child. The mother remains in critical condition due to shrapnel near her heart, and the family has not informed her of her son’s death.
Witness Testimony
The baby’s grandmother, Feryal Abu Heikal, was in the car when the shooting happened. She described stopping when they observed Israeli military vehicles, initially believing the shots were warnings until realizing the vehicle was hit. Describing the scene as ‘horrific,’ she questioned the military action against civilians.
The funeral for the infant is scheduled for later on Saturday.
International Reaction
The British consulate in Jerusalem reacted with shock and urged for an ‘immediate and transparent investigation’ into the incident. They emphasized the necessity of civilian protection.
According to the United Nations, over 1,000 Palestinians have died in the West Bank and east Jerusalem since the conflict erupted. The deaths include 240 children. Since the start of 2026, 49 individuals have lost their lives.
In a similar event, Israeli soldiers opened fire on a family car in the northern West Bank in March, resulting in four deaths, including two children, as reported by the Palestinian Authority’s Health Ministry.
Accountability Questions
Israeli soldiers facing allegations of harming Palestinians seldom face prosecution, with charges brought in less than 1% of 2,427 complaints between 2016 and 2024, according to Israeli rights group Yesh Din.
Over 700,000 Israelis reside in the occupied West Bank and east Jerusalem, regions captured by Israel from Jordan in 1967, which Palestinians aim to designate as part of a future state.
