The phrase ‘the game slows down’ frequently describes the NBA playoffs. Every moment feels intense. Teams are focused, and each play matters significantly. Success often hinges on which team or player excels when the pace shifts.
In the first game of the NBA Finals on Wednesday, New York Knicks’ Jalen Brunson showcased his ability. He scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, propelling the Knicks to a 105-95 win over the San Antonio Spurs. This victory gave the Knicks a 1-0 lead in the series. The Spurs managed only 19 points in the final quarter, appearing unsettled as they struggled to score.
Brunson has emerged as a top playoff performer due to his effectiveness during crucial moments. Since the 2023 postseason began, Brunson ranks highest in clutch field goal attempts and makes. ‘Clutch’ refers to situations within five points with less than five minutes remaining. Only 14.8% of his clutch shots are assisted, the lowest for players with at least 100 attempts. This statistic underscores his confidence in taking and making critical shots, often creating opportunities on his own.
‘In the biggest moments, he shows up, and that’s what MVPs are supposed to do,’ New York head coach Mike Brown commented. ‘We gave him control, and he delivered.’
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson added, ‘He’s skilled, knows his spots, and handles pressure well. He’s exceptional.’
During Game 1, Brunson overcame a difficult start to his game. He left briefly in the first quarter due to an apparent right knee injury. His left ankle was also hurt in the second quarter. By the third quarter’s end, he had made only seven of 22 shots. But he rebounded in the fourth, finishing with 30 points.
‘It starts with my confidence and work ethic,’ Brunson explained about his strong finish. ‘Being on the road with my teammates’ support is crucial. Our mutual trust is key.’
On the other side, the Spurs struggled throughout the second half, scoring only 40 points. In the final quarter, Victor Wembanyama momentarily rallied with eight points but struggled to find efficiency. He scored only 11 points on 3-of-8 shooting, turning the ball over twice. Meanwhile, the Knicks committed no turnovers in the fourth quarter. Wembanyama’s team couldn’t support him effectively, shooting just 28.6% from the field in that period. De’Aaron Fox, the oldest Spurs starter, failed to stabilize the team, missing two shots and having two turnovers.
In basketball, clutch moments can hinge on small sample sizes where unexpected outcomes occur. Game 1 doesn’t imply the Spurs will consistently falter under pressure, but clutch situations have been challenging for them this postseason. Their offensive efficiency rating stands at 96.8 in clutch times, while New York holds a 107.7 rating, with a net rating of 18.5. This shows the Knicks excel as games tighten, pulling away from opponents.
Brown remarked, ‘[Brunson] was the MVP in the second half. He fulfilled the role expected of MVP candidates, carrying us to victory.’
