Jeff Bezos, known as the founder of Amazon and owner of The Washington Post, expressed his views about President Trump during a CNBC interview on Wednesday. Bezos described Trump as ‘more mature, more disciplined’ in his second term and defended recent decisions to reduce The Post’s newsroom.
In his interview with journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin on CNBC’s ‘Squawk Box,’ Bezos stated, ‘Trump has lots of good ideas, and he’s been right about a lot of things. You have to give him credit where credit is due.’
Bezos has encountered criticism over perceived attempts to align with the Trump administration, especially after disputes in Trump’s first term. His attendance at the president’s inauguration and Amazon’s $40 million investment in a documentary about Melania Trump, with a $35 million promotion, have fueled these claims.
Critics suggest that Bezos’s changes at The Post were meant to placate Trump. Before the 2024 election, Bezos ended the practice of presidential endorsements by The Post’s editorial board. This decision followed a drafted endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris. A shift in The Post’s opinion section to favor ‘personal liberties and free markets,’ excluding opposing views, resulted in notable subscription cancellations over the last 18 months.
Bezos emphasized his willingness to work with all presidents, regardless of political affiliation, stating he was ‘on the side of America.’ When questioned about Melania Trump’s documentary deal, Bezos denied involvement, dismissing claims of seeking influence.
