Kacey Musgraves, the renowned singer-songwriter, stirred controversy by criticizing Italian explorer Christopher Columbus. This occurred just before Columbus Day, during her performance at the American Airlines Center in Texas on a Sunday night.
Addressing the crowd, Musgraves questioned, “Tomorrow’s Monday?… Ew, that’s right, wait, it’s Columbus Day? It’s what now?” The audience quickly responded, mentioning Indigenous People’s Day instead. Musgraves then exclaimed, “Yeah, no yeah yeah, actually, obviously f— Columbus. Literally the lamest person to probably ever exist. Like for real. What a loser. You’re a loser, Christopher Columbus, we hate you!”
Columbus is both celebrated for his pivotal journeys across the Atlantic, which paved the way for European exploration in the Americas, and criticized for his treatment of Indigenous people and the onset of colonization. Controversy has persisted regarding his legacy, with debates over whether he should be celebrated.
Recently, Musgraves has been in the news for her political activism. In August, she encouraged her fans to support the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights. She stated, “It’s a wonderful organization, and they help give aid — legal aid — and money to children whose parents have been deported unfairly. It’s not a political thing. It’s just, these kids need help.”
During a concert in Dallas over the weekend, Musgraves hosted Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico, reportedly aligning her support with him. She mocked former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem as part of this involvement.
In contrast, Theo Wold, who formerly served as a White House deputy assistant for domestic policy under President Donald Trump, defended Columbus. Speaking to Fox News Digital, Wold stated, “Obviously, no one expects a corporate-backed recording star to know a damn thing about world history, but unfortunately, the abysmal educational standards of our public schools have made Musgrave’s misinformed views widespread among regular Americans. That’s the real problem. Columbus was a courageous adventurer and ahead-of-his-time navigator to whom we owe much of the prosperity we now enjoy. The kind of prosperity that makes it possible for Musgraves to rake in millions while spouting uneducated hot takes with no basis in reality.”
A statue of Columbus was defaced in Central Park, New York in February 2023, highlighting the ongoing controversy surrounding historical figures like Columbus.
Musgraves continues to use her platform to advocate for political change and support causes she believes in, generating discussions on historical figures and public policies.
