Katherine Maher, the President and CEO of National Public Radio (NPR), is set to receive the James C. Goodale First Amendment Award on October 26. This announcement comes despite some of her previous critiques regarding the First Amendment. Harper’s Magazine is honoring Maher for her leadership during a period of intense scrutiny and challenges, including opposing former President Donald Trump’s attempts to defund NPR.
According to Harper’s, Maher guided NPR through demanding political, legal, and financial times, emphasizing the vital role of journalism in a democratic society. Concurrently, Congress withdrew $1.1 billion in federal support to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in 2025. However, NPR received an $80 million contribution from a Democratic benefactor, mitigating some financial impacts.
Despite accolades for her journalism advocacy, Maher previously described the First Amendment as a “challenge” when she served as the CEO of Wikimedia. In 2021, Maher addressed disinformation efforts at Wikimedia, characterizing the First Amendment as a robust protector of rights while complicating the moderation of misinformation.
NPR has faced criticism in the past, notably for declining coverage of the Hunter Biden laptop story in 2020. Many saw this as an attempt to shield then-presidential candidate Joe Biden. Maher, who became CEO of NPR in 2024, later acknowledged the oversight, stating during congressional testimony in 2025 that NPR didn’t give the story adequate attention.
Tim Graham, NewsBusters’ executive editor, criticized Harper’s for awarding Maher. He suggested that fierce criticism of Trump and Republicans is not synonymous with First Amendment advocacy. He questioned NPR’s accountability related to President Biden and argued that defunding NPR is not a First Amendment violation.
Maher responded to the recognition, emphasizing the importance of public media in serving the public interest and defending the First Amendment. She highlighted the freedoms and protections it offers.
NPR maintains its commitment to journalistic integrity, expressing enthusiasm for Maher’s First Amendment Award. The organization aims to continue serving the public and fostering understanding among diverse audiences.
