Dan Cogdell, a Houston lawyer who previously defended Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton against criminal charges and during his 2023 impeachment trial, has now endorsed Mr. Paxton’s Democratic opponent, James Talarico, in the U.S. Senate race.
Cogdell expressed that Paxton has diverted from his main responsibility, which is to serve the people of Texas. According to Cogdell, Talarico emphasizes unity rather than division and has the ability to bring together both Democrats and some Republicans, a quality needed presently.
This endorsement was made during a podcast interview with Talarico, recorded shortly after Paxton’s win in the Republican primary against Senator John Cornyn. Cogdell’s support adds weight to Talarico’s narrative that Republican voters who supported Cornyn have a place in his campaign.
Talarico mentioned in the podcast that he does not aim to create divisions among people. Campaign finance records show that last year, Cogdell made the maximum personal contribution allowed by law to Paxton’s Senate campaign. However, he has since changed his stance, citing Paxton’s close alignment with former President Trump as a concern. Cogdell detailed this shift in an interview with The New York Times.
