LeBron James to Leave Lakers: New NBA Journey Awaits

LeBron James is set to leave the Los Angeles Lakers after an eight-year tenure. This decision comes 16 years after his first significant move from Cleveland to Miami. James has informed the Lakers that he will play his 24th NBA season with a different team.

James has repeatedly stated that his drive is to win more championships. This indicates he will likely choose a team capable of competing for an NBA title in 2027. Golden State Warriors are considered a potential option. Other possibilities include reunions with Cleveland or Miami, or perhaps teaming up with Victor Wembanyama in San Antonio.

“I’ve done it all. I’ve seen it all,” James said following the end of the Lakers’ season in May, marking his last game with the franchise. He emphasized that competing and winning championships remain his prime motivation. James has committed to at least one more season, with his family—particularly his wife Savannah and daughter Zhuri—supporting this decision.

James’ choice on his future team is anticipated to be a major event during the NBA’s offseason player movement period. This decision arrives alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo’s expected trade from Milwaukee to Miami. The Lakers expressed gratitude to James for his contributions over the past eight years. “LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history,” said Jeanie Buss of the Lakers ownership group.

James’ plans were first reported by ESPN, citing Rich Paul from Klutch Sports. He will start official talks with new teams when the league opens the free-agent period, but cannot sign until the moratorium lifts on July 6.

The Golden State Warriors appear to have increased momentum for James’ acquisition, highlighted by Draymond Green not exercising his $27.6 million option to offer the team roster flexibility. Green noted on his podcast that his decision was meant to give the organization flexibility. James has strong connections with Warriors’ key figures such as Green, Stephen Curry, and coach Steve Kerr.

During his time with the Lakers, which was his longest single-team stint, James led them to the 2020 championship and achieved numerous records, including becoming the all-time NBA points leader.
