A U.S. citizen from Trinidad expressed strong opinions about birth tourism and illegal immigration. Kris Ramsingh, now a Virginia business owner, immigrated legally in 2006 and became a citizen by 2015. He described these practices as disrespectful to those who follow legal pathways.
Ramsingh’s Journey to Citizenship
Ramsingh’s immigration journey characterized his support for some of the immigration policies during President Donald Trump’s administration. He spoke about the challenges illegal immigrants pose, receiving free healthcare and education at the expense of legal entrants who adhere to stringent requirements. These requirements included providing vaccination records, personal documentation, criminal background checks, and financial proof to ensure that they wouldn’t rely on state aid.
“America doesn’t owe us anything,” Ramsingh stated, emphasizing the privilege he feels as a legal immigrant.
Reflecting on his arrival week, coinciding with Independence Day, Ramsingh shared memories of coming to the U.S. with minimal resources alongside his wife.
A Deep Connection to His New Home
Since settling in Roanoke, Virginia, Ramsingh has developed a profound connection with the United States. He vividly remembers his birth country’s political unrest in 1990 when American soldiers provided a sense of safety, influencing his appreciation for the U.S.
Ramsingh launched Dominion Custom Upholstery over a decade ago and expanded into another business focused on boatworks and interior repairs. His entrepreneurial spirit aligns with his belief in the American Dream—opportunities for hardworking individuals to achieve success despite failures.
He also founded a missionary organization, Dominion Project International, that provides aid while spreading religious teachings in India, Africa, and the Caribbean.
Views on U.S. Immigration Policies
Ramsingh expressed pride whenever returning from his missions abroad, feeling a comforting sense of belonging upon reentering the U.S. However, he expressed frustration watching critics, both American and foreign, voice disdain for the country.
When addressing accusations of anti-immigrant sentiment against Trump, Ramsingh insisted that the issues relate to ensuring legal procedures are followed. He criticized what he perceives as the Biden administration’s policies, equating open borders with an invasion.
While acknowledging the hardship of deportation stories, Ramsingh believed these stem from lenient immigration enforcement over the years. “The privilege of being here” should not be underestimated, Ramsingh remarked.
His perspective portrays immigration as a privilege earned through diligence, not a granted right.
