Demand for Answers
Local officials are demanding answers regarding the recent mass power outages and the recovery efforts spearheaded by the Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO). U.S. Representative Frank Mrvan is actively involved, revealing that his staff is drafting a letter advocating for a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) investigation into NiSource, NIPSCO’s parent company. The investigation will focus on restoration efforts and investments in recovery plans.
Federal Investigation Initiatives
Mrvan emphasized the importance of federal oversight by FERC, which monitors energy monopolies and interstate commerce. He pledged, “We’ll use every leverage that we have on the federal side to make sure that we are looking into and investigating what went right, what went wrong and what needs to be improved upon.” As Gary faces ongoing consequences from a prolonged two-week outage, the city has urged NIPSCO for a continuous response, backed by a “Recovery Action Plan.”
Local Government Actions
Mayor Eddie Melton expressed his commitment to strengthening Gary’s power grid, aiming for resilience similar to that of its residents. Melton stated, “I pledge to continue to fight on behalf of all those who reside in Gary to turn this point in our city’s history into a time of hope and opportunity.”
Despite substantial damage from an unprecedented storm, NIPSCO mobilized thousands of resources from 14 states. They have committed to cooperating with government inquiries related to the incident, maintaining a focus on restoring power to affected customers.
Mrvan’s Continued Efforts
Mrvan pursued a federal investigation to scrutinize NiSource’s emergency response and resource management. Highlighting accountability over patience, he reassured constituents of his proactive stance using his role on the Energy and Water Subcommittee.
Collaborating with Governor Mike Braun and other local authorities, Mrvan affirmed his commitment to addressing community concerns. Braun requested an Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission examination, although Mrvan noted FERC’s broader jurisdiction over interstate energy systems.
NIPSCO’s Engagement with Communities
NIPSCO actively engages with leaders in Gary and other affected communities to share information and support recovery efforts. In response to the storm’s impact, NIPSCO suspended disconnections for nonpayment through September 30 and contributed $2 million toward community recovery initiatives.
Melton acknowledged NIPSCO’s temporary measures, considering them a critical initial step but stressed the need for further action. Gary’s comprehensive recovery plan prioritizes infrastructure enhancement, corporate accountability, and meaningful relief efforts.
The city underscores community collaboration to rebuild stronger post-storm. Officials, contractors, non-profits, residents, and businesses are called to unite in efforts to surpass previous conditions.
