As the deadline of August 30 approaches for NFL teams to finalize their 53-man rosters, the Los Angeles Rams face a unique challenge. They are navigating the uncertainty surrounding former player Aaron Donald’s potential return from retirement.
Roster Decisions Amid Uncertainty
The Rams, like all teams, must solidify their roster by the end of this week. However, their decision-making process is complicated by Donald’s possible return. The team recently acquired Myles Garrett, a star pass rusher. The prospect of teaming him with Donald excites both fans and the Rams organization.
Aaron Donald, known for his impressive career with the Rams, announced his retirement over two years ago. The Rams must plan for both scenarios: Donald returning or staying retired.
Preparations Underway
Benjamin Royer from the Orange County Register reported that as of Tuesday, there is no update on Donald’s decision. Rams head coach Sean McVay stated that they are preparing roster plans with and without Donald.
“As of Tuesday, there are still no updates for when Donald will come to a decision on returning to the NFL more than two years after retiring,” wrote Royer.
The Rams open their season on September 10 in Melbourne against the San Francisco 49ers. McVay addressed the considerations if Donald decides to return and play.
Donald’s Potential Return
If Donald chooses to rejoin the team, preparations need to occur. McVay emphasized the importance of ensuring Donald’s readiness before playing.
“If he decides he wants to be able to do it, then the next conversations are: What is your ramp-up?” McVay said.
The Rams must determine the ideal timeline for Donald to make a significant impact.
Focused on Present Challenges
McVay highlighted the team’s need for flexibility, a quality he has learned over the past decade. He stressed the importance of focusing on the present rather than worrying about future events.
“We’ve had to have a lot of fluidity and flexibility, and that’s what I’ve had to learn over 10 years,” McVay explained.
As the Rams navigate these decisions, their immediate focus remains on taking each day as it comes.
