The upcoming Senate race in Maine is shaping up to be both costly and contentious, as Democrat Graham Platner goes head-to-head with incumbent Senator Susan Collins. Signs of the race’s potential hostility have quickly emerged.
On Wednesday, Graham Platner, now confirmed as the Democratic nominee, participated in a community bike ride in Bar Harbor. In a video shared after the event, he emphasized a message of unity, stating, Everybody really just wants to help each other out. It’s the message that we need to take into our politics.
In Washington, the divisive nature of the campaign was apparent. Both major parties began formulating their attack strategies. The race is seen as pivotal to their midterm election tactics.
In a recent Oval Office appearance, President Trump launched a verbal attack on Platner, referring to him as a thug
nearly a dozen times. Trump criticized Democratic leaders for their support of Platner, describing the candidate as worse than any human being that’s ever run for office, probably,
and calling him a cheap, no-good person.
While offering subdued praise for Senator Collins, President Trump acknowledged that although she’s not my best friend at all,
she was a sane person.
Collins, a moderate Republican, faces a significant challenge from Platner in the upcoming election.
