The list of politicians demanding Casey Wasserman’s resignation as chairman of LA28 has grown significantly after emails between him and Ghislaine Maxwell surfaced in the Epstein files in February. Despite the controversy, Wasserman recently shared his perspective, stating he never doubted his position.
Wasserman’s Response
When questioned about considering stepping down and discussions with Mayor Karen Bass, Wasserman responded with candor. He mentioned his frequent and productive discussions with the mayor, emphasizing their shared vision for successful Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Bass is currently campaigning for a second term in a fiercely competitive primary election. She has advanced to the runoff, facing Spencer Pratt and Nithya Raman for the final ballot spot. Additionally, California’s gubernatorial race between Republican Steve Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra intensifies.
Political Landscape and Collaborations
Wasserman acknowledged the political changes since the bid for the Games began in 2015. The organizing committee has worked through different presidential administrations, maintaining strong partnerships with government entities regardless of political shifts.
Selected by former Mayor Eric Garcetti to lead the Olympics, Wasserman faced scrutiny following the Epstein files disclosure. Despite the controversy, the LA28 executive committee, after an outside investigation, reaffirmed its support for Wasserman, praising his leadership over the last decade.
“The strong leadership he has exhibited over the past 10 years.”
International Olympic Committee Support
This week, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) gave a strong endorsement of LA28’s progress. Nicole Hoevertsz, head of the IOC’s coordination commission for LA28, applauded the organizing team for their readiness and the successful track of the Games.
With $2 billion in sponsorships and record ticket sales, LA28 is close to its $2.5 billion goal. This domestic sponsorship will be the largest revenue source, ensuring the Games remain privately funded. Already, more than 4 million tickets have been sold, contributing to the projected $7.1 billion budget.
Ticket Sales and Logistics
The next ticket sale phase starts in August. Fans can still register at tickets.la28.org by July 22 for a chance to enter the lottery. Initial sales allow ticket purchases for general sections, with specific seat assignments made as details on venue arrangements are finalized.
Reynold Hoover, CEO of LA28, assured that there would be no last-minute changes in ticket categories, unlike a previous FIFA World Cup scenario that caused dissatisfaction among fans. LA28 aims to manage logistics effectively for what will be the largest Olympic event in history, followed by the biggest Paralympic Games, marking a first for Los Angeles.
