Media Criticism During Pandemic: A Clash Between RFK Jr. and CNN’s Dana Bash

In a recent appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. accused anchor Dana Bash of “press malpractice” during the COVID-19 pandemic. Kennedy criticized Bash for her handling of dissenting views and her approach towards public health authorities.

Kennedy asserted, “You were part of the problem. There was absolute press malpractice. Your job is a fierce skepticism toward authority, and you weren’t doing that.” He accused Bash of marginalizing those who opposed the mainstream narrative, stating, “You were beating up on people who were dissenting.” Bash countered, explaining she was focused on how Kennedy would prevent a future public health crisis.

Bash maintained the COVID vaccine’s effectiveness, asserting its role in preventing deaths during the pandemic. According to research by the CDC and Harvard, primary vaccination could have avoided at least 232,000 deaths among unvaccinated American adults in 2023.

During the exchange, Kennedy blamed CNN for contributing to public fear through its coverage. He questioned the network’s methods, suggesting it incited anxiety among viewers. Bash responded by highlighting CNN’s role in broadcasting government officials, including daily briefings by the president.

As the discussion continued, Kennedy accused Bash and CNN of punishing individuals who distrusted expert Anthony Fauci, alleging Fauci misled the public on various issues, including COVID-19’s origins.

The interview occurred just days after Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment numerous times during a Senate hearing on the pandemic response. Meanwhile, the U.S. recorded its highest number of measles cases in 35 years, with kindergarten MMR vaccine coverage declining.

Kennedy specifically supported measles vaccination, stating, “Parents should get their children vaccinated for measles. Measles vaccine is effective.” Bash previously underscored the importance of identifying false claims rather than simply presenting opposing views.
