On Monday, Lionel Messi achieved a significant milestone by scoring his 17th career World Cup goal, breaking the all-time record at the international tournament. This record-setting goal occurred during a Group J matchup against Austria.
Despite the celebratory moment, controversy emerged. FOX commentator Peter Schmeichel criticized Egyptian referee Amin Mohamed Omar, asserting that the goal in the 38th minute should not have been allowed. On the network’s halftime show, Schmeichel expressed his concerns about a prior penalty decision against Austria, claiming, “I don’t think that goal should have stood.” He argued that the call resulted from a kick behind the player, warranting a free kick instead.
The contentious play stemmed from a throw-in when Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister tripped Xaver Schlager from behind. Moments after Schlager fell, Messi scored the historic goal. Schmeichel, a former Danish goalkeeper, insisted, “That should have been a free kick. VAR should have taken that back. That is a clear and obvious mistake by the referee.”
Despite Schmeichel’s objections, Argentina led 1-0 and seemed poised to begin the tournament with two victories. Argentina previously secured a 3-0 win against Algeria, with Messi scoring his first World Cup hat trick on June 16.
His four goals at the start of the event enabled Messi to surpass Miroslav Klose of Germany as the all-time World Cup goals record holder. Messi also became the first player to score in six consecutive World Cups.
As the tournament progresses, Messi has the chance to finish as history’s top scorer and distributor. He is currently tied with Diego Maradona for most assists in World Cup history, having provided eight assists over five tournaments.
After Monday’s match, the reigning World Cup champions will face Jordan in the final group stage game at 10 p.m. Saturday in Dallas.
