Michigan Jewish leaders have initiated a petition campaign urging Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed and other candidates to commit to ensuring Jewish safety and clarifying their views on Israel, with the potential of losing support if they fail to respond.
Rabbi Josh Whinston, a prominent figure among the rabbis leading the petition, noted a growing concern within the American Jewish community. “The community feels pressure from both sides of the political spectrum,” he expressed, highlighting the need for political clarity and commitments.
El-Sayed, formerly a Michigan health official, recently won the Democratic nomination in a primary marked by debates concerning his criticism of Israel and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). El-Sayed has publicly differentiated his criticism of the Israeli government from a critique of Judaism itself, asserting that he respects Judaism and Jewish people.
The upcoming November election pits El-Sayed against former GOP Rep. Mike Rogers. Rogers lost narrowly in 2024 to Sen. Elissa Slotkin but is focusing on the general election, while El-Sayed is working to consolidate Democratic support.
Key Democratic Support and Criticism
El-Sayed received endorsements from leading progressives like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. However, he faced criticism for his association with Hasan Piker, a left-wing podcaster critical of Israel, and for his controversial response to an attack on a Detroit-area synagogue.
The petition, representing about 40,000 Jewish Michiganders, emphasizes five “nonnegotiables”: safety, identity definition, Jewish sovereignty in Israel, political participation, and a vision for the Middle East’s future. It invites candidates to engage and align with these needs.
Rabbi Whinston stressed the importance of political communities reaffirming their values to their parties, emphasizing the need for Democratic candidates, including El-Sayed, to build coalition support among Jewish constituents.
Campaign Response and Candidate Actions
El-Sayed’s campaign highlighted his ongoing conversations with Jewish organizations, his attendance at Jewish events, and previous meetings with figures like Slotkin.
After distancing himself from Piker’s controversial comments, El-Sayed reiterated his commitment to fighting antisemitism and ensuring community safety, asserting the importance of condemning rhetoric that endangers any community.
Nonetheless, Rabbi Whinston, emphasizing deeper engagement, remains convinced that El-Sayed’s previous statements fall short and hopes for further dialogue. Concerns persist over El-Sayed’s critical remarks about Israel and how they affect his commitment to Jewish safety.
Election Implications
Rabbi Aaron Starr hopes the elected candidate for Michigan’s Senate seat will oppose violent rhetoric against both Jewish people and Israel. This race could determine Senate control, with Democrats required to gain four seats to secure a majority. Michigan, a crucial state in past elections, hasn’t elected a Republican senator since 1994.
Both Whinston and Starr indicated that many Jewish voters remain undecided, reflecting feelings of political uncertainty and aspiring to have a significant voice in the political dialogue.
