MLB Warns Players on Uniform Writing Post-Pride Night Game

2 weeks ago 0

Major League Baseball (MLB) has issued a warning to players following an incident involving San Francisco Giants pitcher Landen Roupp, along with relievers JT Brubaker and Ryan Walker. These players added Bible verses to their Pride Night caps during a recent game against the Chicago Cubs.

During the game that ended in a 5-1 loss on Friday, Roupp wore a cap with “Gen 9:12-16” inscribed on it. This writing partially covered the rainbow SF logo that was part of the Pride Night uniform. Another Giants player, Sam Hentges, opted to wear the team’s standard black cap instead of the Pride-themed version.

“The writing on the cap violates our rules and consistent with normal practice we have warned the players about future violations,” MLB stated.

The MLB clarified the situation, emphasizing that the warning was a routine measure and not a disciplinary action. It stressed that the content of the message was irrelevant to the judgment. The league’s regulations prohibit any writing or display of messages on player apparel and equipment.

MLB teams frequently organize Pride Nights to show support for their LGBTQ+ fans. These events often coincide with Pride Month celebrations in June. During these occasions, teams use rainbow-themed uniform patches and logos, put up specific signage, and involve community leaders and performers.

Roupp explained his decision to include the Genesis verse, which reflects God’s promise never to flood the world again, symbolized by a rainbow. He expressed gratitude for the freedom to express beliefs in the country.

“That’s just kind of something I believe in, and I stand firm in that,” Roupp mentioned.

Giants manager Tony Vitello stated that there was no discussion with the pitchers before the game. He noted that players generally understand the freedom to act as they see fit.
