New Jersey’s Voter Registration Mistake and Its Implications

A federal law already requires states to ensure voters in national elections attest under penalty of perjury that they are U.S. citizens. On July 22, 2026, it was reported that New Jersey mistakenly registered 6,600 noncitizens to vote. Among them, around 400 went on to cast ballots.

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill (D) admitted to this error, which originated during her predecessor’s term. While it is commendable that she acknowledged this serious mistake, the situation emphasizes the need for proper electoral processes. Those who voted illegally must face prosecution.

This incident has sparked discussions about federal involvement in election management. However, using this error as a reason to justify a federal takeover of elections should be approached with caution.
