New York Jets Revamp Defense with Key Additions in 2026

The New York Jets are poised for a significant shift in their defensive performance in 2026, thanks to the guidance of head coach Aaron Glenn. Previously serving as the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, Glenn brings hopes of transformation to a Jets defense that struggled last season.

In 2025, the Jets allowed the second-highest total points per game in the league at 29.6. They also ranked poorly in rushing defense, conceding 139.5 yards per game, and total defense, allowing 355.6 yards each contest. Compounding these issues, the Jets opted to trade away their top defenders, All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner and Pro Bowl defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, at the trade deadline.

For the upcoming season, the Jets have bolstered their defensive lineup with several promising players. Noteworthy additions include David Bailey, the No. 2 overall draft pick, and D’Angelo Ponds, a promising rookie selected in the second round. Veteran presence is also strong with All-Pro linebacker Demario Davis and All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Minkah Fitzpatrick, traded from the Miami Dolphins this March, quickly made an impression in the Jets’ training camp. He secured an interception during Monday’s practice against quarterback Geno Smith, marking the first interception of the camp’s 11-on-11 drills. This is a positive development for the Jets, who previously faltered as the first NFL team to complete an entire season without a single interception.

Upon joining the Jets, Fitzpatrick signed a new three-year, $40 million contract extension. After witnessing his performance, Coach Glenn commended Fitzpatrick’s capabilities, stating, “He’s extremely smart, and he loves football, and at safety, that’s what you’re looking for. I’ve had some good safeties in my career. Early on, I like exactly where he’s at.”

Fitzpatrick’s NFL journey began when he was drafted 11th overall by the Dolphins in 2018. After being traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019, his performance flourished, earning five Pro Bowl selections and three first-team All-Pro honors over six seasons. In 2022, Fitzpatrick led the league with six interceptions, complemented by 96 tackles and 11 pass deflections. With 21 career interceptions, he ranks ninth in the league since 2018.

Known for his versatility and instinctive play, Fitzpatrick is expected to invigorate a Jets defense desperate for a turnaround. Coach Glenn, a former cornerback himself, faces mounting pressure as he aims to demonstrate marked defensive improvement, pivotal for his tenure with the team.
