The trailer for “Obsession,” a horror film by Focus Features, featuring actors Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette, has been released. Directed by Curry Barker, this low-budget film is making waves at the box office. Initially estimated to earn less than $10 million in its opening weekend, “Obsession” surprised everyone with earnings over $17 million.
Last weekend, the film achieved approximately $24 million, increasing to $30 million when including Memorial Day. This represents a 30% rise from its debut weekend. It surpassed more prominent films such as “The Devil Wears Prada 2” and the “Michael” biopic. Remarkably, it even outperformed “The Mandalorian and Grogu” on a Wednesday.

“Obsession,” starring Inde Navarrette as Nikki and Michael Johnston as Bear, is creating a buzz. While second-week jumps like this are rare, the film has now exceeded $70 million worldwide. Projections suggest it might gross over $100 million globally, marking it as one of the year’s most profitable films.
This success story emphasizes that Hollywood’s star power is not always essential for a movie’s success. Directed by 26-year-old content creator Curry Barker of the “That’s a Bad Idea” comedy group, “Obsession” saw minimal initial involvement from prominent producers. However, Jason Blum of BlumHouse Productions joined as an executive producer post its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The film’s cast consists of rising talents such as Megan Lawless and Cooper Tomlinson, alongside Andy Richter in a minor role. No major stars are involved. Inde Navarrette delivers a performance compared to Kathy Bates in “Misery.”
According to Erik Childress, a box office expert, “Obsession” benefited from effective marketing by Focus Features, with strong word-of-mouth contributing to its success.
“The Mandalorian and Grogu” Review: An Enjoyable but Forgettable Return to the “Star Wars” Universe.
Meanwhile, “The Mandalorian and Grogu” faced challenges, making $98 million domestically during Memorial Day weekend. This is the weakest opening for any “Star Wars” film to date, with the previous record for lowest opening held by 2018’s “Solo.” This film marked the first cinematic “Star Wars” release in seven years.
“The Mandalorian and Grogu” was supported by notable creators and stars including Jon Favreau, Pedro Pascal, and Sigourney Weaver. It extends the storyline of “The Mandalorian” television series. The film’s financials contrast with “Obsession,” having been produced on a $165 million budget.
Despite a potentially lukewarm start, industry watchers like Erik Childress advise caution before assuming difficulties for the “Star Wars” franchise. A new installment featuring Ryan Gosling is scheduled for 2027.
Erik Childress remarks: “‘Solo’ had a 65% dip in its second week. As long as ‘Mandalorian’ avoids a drop like that, it might approach $250 million domestically, and globally it could still be a modest success.”
