Outbreak of Cyclosporiasis Linked to Taco Bell Shredded Lettuce

Federal health officials have identified a significant cyclosporiasis outbreak traced to shredded lettuce served at Taco Bell in several states. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) linked the outbreak to lettuce at Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. Consumers are advised to avoid shredded lettuce from these restaurants in those areas.

Two anonymous federal officials confirmed that Taylor Farms supplied the lettuce to Taco Bell. Taylor Farms is a major distributor of fresh vegetables in the United States. Their products, including bagged lettuce and salad kits, are available at numerous grocery stores such as Safeway, Whole Foods, Target, and Walmart.

In a Friday statement, Taylor Farms clarified that none of their branded salads or kits have been linked to the outbreak. They also noted that their branded salad kits do not contain iceberg lettuce and announced a voluntary removal of iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated on Thursday that further investigations might implicate other brands, restaurants, retailers, or distribution channels. The investigation into cyclosporiasis outbreaks and related illnesses continues nationwide.

Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, Michigan’s health department leader, advised consumers to be cautious about their lettuce’s source. Whether eating at home or dining out, awareness of lettuce origins — whether from a bag or a fresh head — is essential, as the investigation remains ongoing.
